National Geographic

National Geographic runs a series of retail stores that help fund the non-profit mission of the National Geographic Society. The stores carry a variety of maps, books, and educational games that help stimulate curiosity about the world, geography and science. As part of an initiative to explore the City of the Future and the role of urban greening, the flagship store on Regent Street in London has a living wall in the storefront that can be seen by the over 1 million passersby a year.

Design Challenge

As part of an initiative by The Royal Institute of British Architects, the Regent Street Association and media partner ELLE Decoration, National Geographic wanted to create an outdoor, adventure statement in their front window using plants. The challenge was that they needed to create this installation without blocking out the light and visibility through the store window display. The solution was to create a narrow living wall that ran from floor to ceiling, creating a dramatic visual punctuation. The narrow section of wall that the Pockets are mounted to was created custom for the installation and exactly fits the width of one Pocket.

The retail store is open daily. The installation can be seen from the street at 83-97 Regent Street, London.

This installation is composed of (11) Chocolate Wally Ones with reservoir.

The Pockets are hung one above another, covering an area 24” wide and almost 12’ high.

A light weight wood frame was created to support the Pockets. The installation took two people less than half a day to install, including hanging the frame, mounting the Pockets and doing the planting.
